littlebigtool.dev

engineering tools for the browser, with the maths left in

Little tools for big questions.

Mesh a gear train. Find out where a bullet lands. Pick the launch date for a trip to Jupiter. Real physics, nothing to install, and every tool tells you what it cannot do.

01 The tools live now

Each one is its own little site with its own terms. Free to try; some sell time-limited passes for the things the server has to work out for you.

CAD / mechanisms

GearGenerator (opens geargenerator.littlebigtool.dev)

Gears that actually mesh.

Parametric gear CAD with a conscience: trains stay meshed while you edit, shafts and layers behave, and the torque, speed and tooth-contact numbers come out of real mechanics. Comes with Swiss watch movements and the Antikythera Moon train as presets.

  • Spur, internal, rack and planetary
  • Torque, power and tooth-contact analysis
  • DXF, STL and OBJ export

liveFree to design; passes for exports

Shooting / physics

Ballistics Workbench (opens ballistics.littlebigtool.dev)

Where does the bullet go?

An external-ballistics workbench tuned for .22 LR: a real drag-model solver for drop, drift, energy and time of flight, with loads you can compare and trajectories you can watch.

  • Drag-model solver, not a lookup table
  • Compare loads and zero ranges
  • Animated, shareable trajectories

liveFree to use; passes for the extras

Space / astrodynamics

Orbital Mission Planner (opens orbital.littlebigtool.dev)

Plan the burn. Pick the date.

Launch windows, porkchop plots, gravity assists, Lagrange orbits and the stars within ten light years: 519 ready-made missions, each worked out by the physics rather than drawn by hand. Paid passes unlock the full data pack for your own tools.

  • Lambert transfers and gravity assists
  • Halo, NRHO and DRO orbits with manifolds
  • CCSDS OEM, ephemerides and budgets to download

liveFree to plan; passes for the data

02 The lab on the bench, not yet shipped

Concept-stage workbenches that run on one machine and are not on the internet yet. They are here because they are the next ones in the queue, and because it is more honest than pretending the queue is empty.

  • LAB-01

    Engine Lab

Generative design and 4-axis CNC planning for small internal-combustion engines, up to a litre.

    concept stage
  • LAB-02

    Compressor Lab

3D-printable air compressors, reciprocating or scroll, printed in PETG-CF, with the seals in TPU.

    concept stage
  • LAB-03

    Brushless Motor Sim

Design, wind and test your own FPV outrunner motors, from the magnetic circuit to the coil layout.

    concept stage
  • LAB-04

    Rewinder

Turn a salvaged hoverboard or washing-machine motor into the generator or motor you actually need.

    concept stage
  • LAB-05

    Optics Generator

Telescope and microscope designs with a real ray trace, plus the printable parts to hold the glass.

    concept stage
  • LAB-06

    Arm Generator

A robotic crane arm from cheap lead-screw actuators, steel tube and printed brackets, with the loads worked out.

    concept stage
  • LAB-07

    Walker Generator

Why does a hydraulic walker burn several times its weight per metre when a cat uses a fraction? A legged-vehicle design bench.

    concept stage
  • LAB-08

    Mobility Optimizer

Evolves the most energy-efficient vehicle for a stated mission from a catalogue of real, buyable parts.

    concept stage
  • LAB-09

    Systems Architect

A local AI agent that drives the other generators and assembles their results into whole systems, telescope to launch window.

    concept stage

03 How we build

  • Real physics

Lambert solvers, drag models and involute geometry, not look-up pictures. Numbers are checked against something independent of the code that made them: conserved energy, the Sun's declination at the solstice, the rocket equation by hand.

  • Your work stays yours

No accounts. Your work lives in your browser session and you save it as a file. We never see it unless you send it with a report.

  • Pay only for what the server makes

Designing and planning are free. A time-limited pass unlocks the downloads the server has to compute for you. No subscriptions, no renewals.

  • Honest about limits

Education and design-study tools. Not navigation, not safety-critical, not certified engineering. Each one says what its model leaves out, in plain words.
